SB2 Visual Response | Surfaces and Patterns

As mentioned previously in my proposal, here I have began to explore surface and pattern design as a visual response to my research on postmodernism, namely the work of Nathalie du Pasquier and The Memphis Group.

However I have tried to draw influence from sources that fit the postmodernist / Memphis ethos, but are unique to objects and settings around me.

What triggered these concepts from me was how Memphis were inspired by the kitsch of 50's diners, and comic books - which were ordinary parts of their daily lives.  As well as that, I think this idea of transforming plain old objects into abstract forms fits the postmodernist idea of how anything can be made into visual art.

One route I decided I could take with pattern design would be to observe and deconstruct everyday objects that I have at hand, simplify and abstract them, before turning them into an arrangement / pattern.

The patterns above were quite process-driven, which is something I enjoyed. They stemmed from an observational sketch of a lightbulb, eventually the forms and components were turned into more graphic shapes.

I like the idea of process pushing my idea forward, and it fits well with pattern-making which involves repetition and placement. I will continue to do this and see what results come of it.
